Ladies and Gentlemen: this is the most invigorating of all Jack Hylton compilations. It contains an unusually large number of hot early jazz sides recorded by Hylton for the HMV label between 1926 and 1930. Nine of these exciting performances feature French trumpeter Philippe Brun, a fine improviser most often encountered on records in the company of Django Reinhardt. Nowhere else in the Jack Hylton digital discography do so many hot, zippy and jazz-identified numbers appear together on one disc. Examples include "Turn on the Heat," "Tiger Rag," "Diga Diga Doo," "Harmonica Harry." The most peculiar portion of this package exists in the two takes of "I Want to Be Bad," a saucy little item closely associated with Annette Hanshaw and Helen Kane, here given a supreme gender bender treatment by Sam Browne and two other naughty males who cheerfully threaten to rouge their lips, shake their shoulders and twist their hips. July 22, 2006: Just by listening to the samples, they have used too much noise reduction and completely stripped the life out of the music. Reverb has also been liberally applied. Very poor, it should not sound like this.
