A tribute to the absurdity of show business egos and the blind marketing machinery that tries to extend moneymaking possibilities into infinity, this compilation showcases a fool's gallery of non-singing stars from the worlds of television, politics, movies and the legitimate stage as they vie for the entertainment world's holy grail -- crossover success. But, thankfully for us, one man's imprudence is another's comic gold. The venerable Leonard Nimoy's graceless warbling leads the way here on two selections: "Proud Mary" and "If I Had a Hammer". Also included is William Shatner's show-stopping "spoken word" rendition of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." While those cuts are perhaps the most famous disasters in the history of celebrity recordings, they're given a run for their money by Jack Webb's inexplicable, mind-blowingly banal reading of "Try a Little Tenderness", and Sebastian Cabot's (yes, TV's Mr. French!) ponderous, shuddering recitation of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe." Eddie Albert keeps the Dylan massacre alive with a "rockin'" cover of "Blowin' in the Wind," and Jim Nabors' bland, stultifying performance of Stevie Wonder's "You Are The Sunshine of My Life" rounds out the carnage.
