Given that this Venezuelan salsero is one of the most volcanic live performers in the entire Latin music spectrum, this two-disc concert recording makes for some potent audio dynamite. Indeed, ¡En Vivo! reproduces the dizzying energy level of an entire D'Leon set, forsaking the singer's later material in favor of the older (and better) stuff. Having begun his career in the early '70s with ensembles like La Dimensión Latina and La Crítica, the performer's repertoire overflows with hits, from the bouncy simplicity of the salsa anthem "Llorarás" to the smoldering sensuality of "Ven Morena." D'Leon's most remarkable feat might be the boldness with which he attacks songs by Cuban legends, such as Beny Moré's "Qué Bueno Baila Usted," Orquesta Aragón's "Calculadora," and Celia Cruz's "Melao de Caña," delivering versions that surpass the originals in their sheer piquancy. That said, you don't need to know the history of Afro-Cuban music to dig into this album -- D'Leon's salsa is as sweet and addictive as the ripest mango. Ernesto Lechner, Barnes & Noble
