Johann Strauss II died in 1899. Violinist and conductor André Rieu celebrates a century of the Waltz King's glorious music with this album, adding a few delightful works by other members of the Strauss family for good measure. Rieu's affectionate performances bring out the music's melodic sweetness, while the reverberant acoustic creates the ambiance of a grand ballroom. In addition to great waltzes like "The Blue Danube," "Vienna Blood," and "Tales from the Vienna Woods," Rieu and his suave-sounding band play an instrumental arrangement of the gorgeous "Nun's Chorus" from the operetta "Casanova" and a rousing Spanish March, complete with clattering castanets. "Not only does the music of Johann Strauss have the power to make people come alive," Rieu writes, "it is alive itself and probably always will be. Immortal music, in the truest sense of the words!" On 100 YEARS OF STRAUSS, this heartfelt sentiment speaks louder than words, proving that these waltzes are as fresh today as when they were composed more than a century ago.
