Focusing on his '90s work, The Best of Me serves up 15 slices of Canada's greatest pop-rock export. Equally adept at dishing out hook-filled rockers ("Can't Stop This Thing We Started," "Summer of '69") and heartfelt ballads ("Please Forgive Me," "Let's Make a Night to Remember)," Bryan Adams spent most of his career being dismissed by critics. Despite a lack of intelligentsia hosannas, Adams's compositional craftsmanship has afforded him significant success on the pop charts, as witnessed by this second compilation of solid hit material (Adams's first compilation, So Far So Good, primarily features his '80s material). Even his songs for the silver screen -- "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman? (Don Juan Demarco), "Everything I Do, I Do for You" (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), and his all-star collaboration with Sting and Rod Stewart, "All for One" (The Three Musketeers) -- ended up as chart-toppers. With this kind of Midas touch, the raspy-voiced Adams has thankfully embraced a wide-ranging approach to music making, as borne out on the infectious, Joan Osborne-flavored duet with Spice Girl Mel C. ("When You're Gone"), the ethereal, Celtic-flavored nuances incorporated into an appearance on MTV Unplugged ("I'm Ready"), and the unobtrusive dance beats found on the Chicano mix of the tasty nugget "Cloud Number Nine."
