November 09, 2002: Let me start by saying that as the family chauffer, I have to listen to a *lot* of children's music. So I try to "ease the pain" by choosing albums that I don't mind hearing over and over and over and over... well, you get the point. Moonboat is the second album by Tom Chapin. I gave it only four stars only because it doesn't have the complexity and diversity in both music and humor which he displayed in his later albums (see "My Hometown" and "Billy the Squid"). OTOH, while I told my husband that I only really liked two songs on this album (actually more like four or five), I caught myself singing along with most of them. My 5-year old is not as picky as I am, and enjoys the album anyway. Her favorites are "Library Song," "State Laughs," and "Happy Birthday." Mine are "Mother's Day," "Alphabet Soup," and "Grow in Your Own Sweet Way." Of the later, Tom Chapin's albums usually feature some very nice, often complex (as in rhythm and harmony) rounds, and this beautiful lullaby/prayer speaks to all parents who want to see their children grow up safe and happy.
