"Dear Uncle, Something terrible has happened. A madman has moved into our house!" This story of a boy named Christoph and his eccentric new upstairs neighbor is designed to introduce young people to Beethoven's life, character, and music. Beethoven Lives Upastairs is told through a series of letters between Christoph and his uncle that is evocatively accompanied by excerpts from many of the composer's best-known symphonies, sonatas, and chamber works. Although very young children might be frightened by the initial appearance of the "madman" Beethoven, the tale is suitably compelling -- and highly educational -- for ages five and up.
