About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Heartbreak is the theme at the center of Bare, Annie Lennox's first album of new material since 1995's covers collection, Medusa, and her first set of self-penned songs in a decade. The 11 songs ache with a sense of loss and longing and, with Lennox's legendary voice, make for some extremely soulful pop. Recorded in London and produced by longtime collaborator Steve Lipson, Bare is true to the forward-thinking pop that put Lennox on the map with Eurythmics. The album's gorgeous arrangements mesh well with Lennox's subdued yet powerful chops -- ranging from the chugging electro-pop and soaring vocals that blossom from the ambient "Pavement Cracks" to the robust harmonies and Aretha Franklin–like phrasing framing "Twisted." Some of her more unsavory feelings of betrayal are even transformed into the sassy, mid-tempo strut "Bitter Pill." Ballads, however, continue to be this 48-year-old's forte, and she delivers with standout tear-jerkers such as the subtle, string-and-harp-accented "A Thousand Beautiful Things" and the shimmering search for hope and strength, "Oh God (Prayer)." With Bare, Lennox lets her emotions flow freely and communicates them, seemingly one-on-one, to her audience. The limited edition includes a bonus DVD featuring a previously unseen interview with Lennox and an acoustic performance of Bare's "A Thousand Beautiful Things" and "Wonderful." August 12, 2003: "Bare" is the album I've been waiting for: melancholy, harmonic, catchy, and up-beat... all in one package. I have been a huge fan of Annie's since Eurythmics, but I was not all that thrilled with "Medusa" or "Diva". I wasn't expecting all that much out of this release and perhaps that's what made it such a pleasant surprise for me. The minute I put the earphones on in Virgin, I was hooked. Each and every song on "Bare" is terrific. Beautifully arranged and orchestrated with timely and meaningful lyrics. Annie's voice is in fine form, not something you can say for every aging pop star. She's managed to stay current without looking or sounding ridiculous (take note Rolling Stones, Madonna). Her only challenge now is to produce her next album at this level of quality. Thank you Annie for this gem!
