About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This is a digitally remastered, but truncated single-disc CD reissue of the classic 1959 performance by Belafonte, issued upon its 30th anniversary in 1989. Inexplicably, all of Belafonte's between-song patter and four songs were eliminated, no doubt in an attempt to fit the whole concert on one disc. The editing was done with a machete, and the concert loses all of its spontaneity and pacing. For those who are familiar with the original, magnificent double-LP set, the edits will make you cringe. For the record, the excised songs are "Take My Mother Home," "Man Piaba," "All My Trials," and "Merci Bon Dieu." Save your turntables and get the records. Cary Ginell, All Music Guide

February 14, 2006: This is pure and simple butchery of the original recording. The title is misleading for people who have listened to the original recording. I hope someone will bring back the original recording into CD form. Why on earth do they have to take out some of the best from the original I wonder? No excuse for this kind of editing. Still it’s a good CD but I am disappointed. I wish it were mentioned in the cover that this is an edited version.

January 21, 2003: I first came across the magic of Harry Belafonte when I was in Jr. High school. I loved The Banana Boat Song (Day-O). I had to hear more of him. A college friend of mine made me a tape of Harry B. at Carnegie Hall and I have been listening to it regularly since.(I am now 46 years old) I have played it for my husband and my two children. When my son came home from school in 4rd grade and said they where learning about John Henry I immediately played "The Tape". He took it to school to share with the class. I have listened to all of the Belafonte music I can find, but the Carnegie Hall Show is my all time favorite!
