About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Imagine a cross between Snoop Dogg and Buddy Holly and you've got Eminem -- post-gangsta rap's great white dork. With a wicked tongue, rhyme skills that would stun John Donne, and a flow that suggests Lenny and Squiggy more than Mike D or MCA, this son of the mean streets of urban Detroit might be the best white rapper of all time. His Dr. Dre-produced debut is a confrontational, offensive, undeniably funny update on the usual shock-rap shtick. On cuts like "My Name Is," "My Fault," and his hilariously grim response to Will Smith's "Just the Two of Us" ("'97 Bonnie & Clyde") his wit, imagery, and brilliant sense of comedic irony are unprecedented. Dre's production is hands off -- this is Em's show, folks -- and a little more musical richness might have made these 20 cuts fly by a bit quicker. Still, taken in regular doses, a few choice cuts at a time, this is the hip-hop breakthrough of 1999. Jon Dolan, Barnes & Noble

July 11, 2004: On this album, Eminem know how to get his word out about how angry he is and how dark he thinks. The only special thing about that is, he doesn't use screaming to release his anger, instead, he takes a more playful-sounding approach to it which is very disturbing, yet funny at the same time. Eminem is a very angry person, but his tone of voice makes him sound like someone who's playful. Unlike on the Marshal Mathers LP, Eminem sounds calm, subtle, and fun-loving, yet disturbing and dark at the same time. Whether it's talking about his mother, DeAngelo Bailey, or Kurt Cobain shooting himself (on track 13), Eminem remains sinister with a dash of humor.

What to watch out for

  • Drugs:

The professional junkie's grocery list -- every drug out there plus drunk driving.

  • Language:

A gallon of Clorox couldn't clean this mouth.

  • Messages

  • Sex:

As explicit as it gets, including references to rape and other sexual abuse.

  • Violence:

    Murder, torture, and suicide.

  • Consumerism:

He's too busy offending people to worry about cars or diamonds.

What Parents Need to Know

About TheSlim Shady LP

Parents need to know that Eminem is an excellent rapper and a horrible role model. He's extremely vulgar and offensive, broaching every explicit topic from drugs to venereal disease to rape, torture, murder, and suicide.

Families Can Talk About

Families can talk about how shock value is used to get attention and sell products. If they can handle this material maturely, they can handle anything. Note: The edited version is very difficult to get a hold of these days, and Eminem's swearing is the tamest part of his content anyway.
