Editorial Reviews

Following the death of Hank Williams in 1953, MGM tried different ploys to keep his recordings selling, including overdubbing band backing on a series of song demos Williams had recorded for his song publisher and, in the '60s, adding incredibly cheesy string section arrangements to several of his singles, a dozen of which are included here. Needless to say, the string bits were ill-conceived at best and idiotic at worst, as a quick listen to classic honky tonk sides like "Lovesick Blues" or "You Win Again" makes apparent. Why anyone at MGM thought this orchestral overdubbing thing was a good idea remains baffling all these years later. Steve Leggett, All Music Guide

June 10, 2004: Hank may not have had the voice of Eddy Arnold but he had such a talent for writing heart-breaking songs that are so beautiful. If you buy one album in your life this should definitely be considered

June 23, 2003: “The Legend Lives Anew” being the CD version of the vinyl “Hank Williams with Strings Volume I” is a much under rated CD. This is a CD for all country fans, the die-hard purists, just to show how easy Hank would have outshone them all through the decades after his death using what is effectively ‘The Nashville Sound’, and the maybe-maybe not country fans who shy away from the original unembellished country performances. Hank is at his very best and the strings support and enhance his genius rather than in any way detract from the original. A highly recommended CD, buy this now and encourage Volumes II and III into production to replace the vinyl LP versions so hard to find these days.
