Keith Green emerged from the Jesus Movement of the mid-'70s to become one of Christian music's most influential and beloved performers. An extraordinarily prolific artist before he died in a plane crash in 1982, Green and his collaborator/wife Melody wrote and recorded what remain some of the most enduring Christian pop songs ever released. Thirty-eight of them can be found on this two-disc set. Music truly was Green's ministry, and he shunned all trappings of fame -- even refusing to sign autographs -- instead using his music to evangelize to "all who have ears." Like the protest era out of which he rose, Green's songs were meant to inspire action. Even a seemingly blithe number such as "Because of You" is at heart a call to recognize God's transforming grace. The spitfire "No One Believes in Me Anymore" and poignant "How Can They Live Without Jesus" show the Greens' knack for turning compassion toward unbelievers into an inspirational call to arms. Some of Green's more theatrical numbers, such as "You Put This Love in My Heart," may call to mind such contemporaneous bell-bottomed efforts as "Godspell," but on the whole, it's remarkable how well Green's music has stood the test of time. Perhaps that's because his message remains ageless. Lisa Zhito Barnes & Noble
