September 19, 2009: The Bothy Band was an early traditional Irish "super-group", and this is their first album. It would be fair to say they set a standard for an entire generation of musicians who've followed, wringing remarkable nuance from a set of traditional tunes through original settings and of course virtuoso musicianship. The band broke up after just 3 years together (from 1975 to 1978), which is not surprising considering the amount of firepower each member could deliver. Matt Malloy, Tommy Peoples, Paddy Keenan, Donal Lunny, and Michael O'Domhnaill all have gone on to storied careers as solo artists and with other acts. Hearing them together on this recording is quite and experience.
