It's been three years since Billy Ray Cyrus released a studio album, and the country star surprises fans by breaking his recording fast with an inspirational album. As the recent chart-topping success of Randy Travis's gospel turn proves, there's certainly a market for country music with a spiritual message. Cyrus's The Other Side offers songs with positive, even meaty, lyrics that nevertheless steer clear of being overly religious. Give Cyrus points for sticking to his swaggering, rocking, country-hunk persona -- this stuff rocks, even as it delivers its upbeat message, as the tracks "Always 16," "Love Has No Walls," and his bluesy version of "Amazing Grace" attest. When Cyrus does slow the tempo, he does so with tenderness, as on the lovely Bebo Norman-penned "Tip of My Heart" or his self-penned title track. Billy Ray Cyrus isn't trying to reinvent himself here, just show fans the other side of an artist caught up in the superficiality of the entertainment business. It could be Cyrus's most genuine album yet. Lisa Zhito, Barnes & Noble
