About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Technically, All the Best was the first compilation of McCartney's solo material, since Wings Greatest covered songs released under the Wings aegis. Well, there is considerable overlap between the two records -- no less than ten of that album's 12 songs are here, yet only the hard-rocking "Hi Hi Hi" is truly missed -- although the seven new songs do give this album a different character, for better or worse. With the U.S. version of All the Best, which has four different songs than its British counterpart, the balance shifts toward the positive, since it simply boasts a better selection of songs. Yes, "Once Upon a Long Ago," the single offered as bait on the British All the Best, isn't here, but it's not missed since two of the four songs exclusive to the American version are among McCartney's best solo singles ("Junior's Farm," "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey") and the other two are good adult contemporary easy listening (the previously non-LP "Goodnight Tonight," "With a Little Luck"). These songs add to the retrospective, although it's still not perfect -- such highlights as "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Take It Away" really should have been included. However, as a cross section of McCartney's solo singles, this is very, very good. It may be a little heavy on the schmaltz at times, yet this is still mainstream pop craft of the highest order. July 20, 2008: This cd contains some classic McCartney tunes like the latinesque 'Goodnight Tonight' and the rollicking live version of 'Coming Up', and at 70 minutes plus, certainly gives the listener his/her money's worth of music. However, there are a couple of drawbacks to this collection. It repeats a number of tracks that were on a previous compilation, 'Wings Greatest', which in turn, limits the amount of room for material from McCartney's early to mid eighties albums. Missing are gems like Tug of War, Waterfalls, and Press - a chock full-of-hooks single from 1986's 'Press to Play'. In addition to this, Capitol chose not to include an excellent newly recorded song, ' Once Upon a Long Ago' which appears on the UK version of 'All the Best' . In spite of this, the disc is pretty solid and remains an enjoyable overview of Paul McCartney's post- Beatles recording career.

March 09, 2004: Referred to as "technically, the first compilation of McCartney's solo material" Upon further investigation the album is as it says "Paul McCartney - All The Best" and not the best of Paul McCartney. The album contains no less than 12 songs (13 if you include uncle Albert with Linda) by various accompanying artists. This is not a solo album, but much more it is the best of Paul since his days with John, George and Ringo. It does have 4 different songs to the British counterpart but only 17 in total whereas the British version has 20. Two of the songs mentioned in an earlier review "Goodnight Tonight" and "With a little luck" were in fact recorded by "Wings" and were not solo recordings (not even Paul McCartney & Wings). Of the 4 songs missing 2 of them are "Pipes of Peace" (a Christmas #1 in 1983 telling the story of the soccer game in World War 1 between the British & German troops at Christmas) & "Mull of Kintyre" (Written about "his" island and featuring some great bagpipes) All in all this album is worthy of being in anybody's collection and with it's variation of Paul's work is something that can be played again and again no matter what mood the listener may be in.
