About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This features all of the Heartbeats and Shep & the Limelights' best recordings -- two groups with slightly different lineups and one strong constant: James Sheppard on lead vocals. The 40 tracks make this collection definitive, but some may balk at paying for two discs worth of material. Sheppard's smooth tenor was obviously a source of inspiration for George "Smitty" Smith, the Manhattans' original lead singer, who sang with a similar ache in his tenor. There are many timeless pieces here, most written by Sheppard, to warm your heart, including "A Thousand Miles Away," "Down on My Knees," "500 Miles to Go," "Three Steps From the Altar," "Our Anniversary," "Daddy's Home," and "What Did Daddy Do." A slow-song specialist, Sheppard did many up-tempo tunes with both the Heartbeats and the Limelights, making this a varied collection. Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
