I've heard too many recordings where you can almost hear the players asking 'Beethoven couldn't have really meant THIS, could he?' Not so with this recording whatsoever. I love this recording! I've loved it for 30 years now. Beethoven really did know what he wanted -- imagine! And what must have been then -- and is still now -- a little strange to the ear on first hearing turns out that it could really be no other way. Their performance is a little '19th century' romantic, but guess what, Beethoven composed this music in the 19th century. In this recording the tender pieces are exquisitely so, and I invite you to compare the aggressive passages of the Grosse Fugue to the raw energy of Jimi Hendrix.
