Here's a howdy-do! To record new versions of Gilbert and Sullivan's best-loved classics, Telarc assembled some of Britain's finest singers and the Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus under the deft guidance of conductor Charles Mackerras. Alternating spiffy comedy with graceful sentiment, his interpretations perfectly capture this music's lasting charm. These delightful new versions of "The Mikado," "H.M.S. Pinafore," "The Pirates of Penzance," "The Yeomen of the Guard," and "Trial By Jury" will bewitch both devoted G&S fans and newcomers. Even those familiar with Sir Malcolm Sargent's celebrated recordings should not be disappointed by these new Savoyard offerings. "The Mikado" boasts distinguished tenor Anthony Rolfe-Johnson as Nanki-Poo and as Katisha, mezzo-soprano Felicity Palmer, whose uproariously funny acting redeems W. S. Gilbert's acidulous jokes about aging women. "Pinafore" is even better. Thomas Allen's Captain Corcoran is the best interpretation of this role ever recorded, sung with the same integrity and musical subtlety he devotes to Elgar and Vaughan Williams. In "The Pirates of Penzance," tenor John Mark Ainsley is an elegant Frederic and Richard Suart rattles off the Major General's patter numbers with surgical precision. This five-disc set is a feast of razor-sharp jokes and lush Victorian tunefulness -- the perfect gift for any D'Oyly Carte wannabe. Benjamin Ivry, Barnes & Noble

August 07, 2002: My name is Daniel Osborn and I am 16 yrs. old and I love Gilbert and Sullivan operas. My very first opera that I ever seen of Gilbert and Sullivan is The Pirates of Penzance. Odly enough I watched it on the Disney channel late one night and fell in love with the music and got hooked on to Gilbert and Sullivan ever since. I recently bought this recording and thought it was wonderful. I liked how all of the performers portrayed their characters well. Sir Charles Makerras did an outstanding job with the orchestration and the chorus work. The only thing that I thought was missing from these recordings was the full opera itself meaning (words and music) That is the only downfall of the recording. I have three favorite people on this recording that I would like to mention. Donald Adams, Richard Stuart, and Felicity Palmer. I liked how these people carried out the characters moods in all their performances. If you want to listen to a good character portraying then listen to Donald Adams as the Mikado. He does a fantastick job setting the character as well as The Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance. Felicity Palmer can be sweet and mean persay as we hear her in H.M.S. PINAFORE as Buttercup. And the Ravishing Katisha. She is by far the best person to portray those characters. Then we have Richard Stuart. I liked how he portrayed Major General Stanely and liked how he sang the famous song which takes talent to do. Also he does a fabulous job as KO-KO the lord high executioner in The Mikado. He can play the very funny and boisterous executioner in the song ''As someday It may happen'' as well as soft and tender hearted in the song ''Willow Tit Willo'' He also portrayed the Judge in ''Trial by Jury'' Fantastically. As you can see if you are a Gilbert and Sullivan fan then this is the cd for you.
