Alanis Morissette has been pushing people's buttons for the better part of a decade, but more important, she's been pushing herself in unique musical directions -- a combination that's made her one of the most enduring singer-songwriters of her generation. This 19-track retrospective retraces virtually all the steps that Alanis has made over the years, ranging from the angry-young-woman fist-shaking of such early hits as "You Oughta Know" to the almost hymnlike pensiveness of "That I Would Be Good." Naturally, the disc spends plenty of time on the singer's chart hits, but there's also a nice sampling of material that might have otherwise slipped under the radar -- from "Mercy," her elegiac contribution to Jonathan Elias's sweeping Prayer Cycle to a suitably sassy take on Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" (culled from the soundtrack to De-Lovely). The Collection only offers up one newly recorded tune -- a burnished take on Seal's "Crazy" -- but there's enough diversity in its grooves to make it a perfect one-stop for Alanis fans. December 26, 2005: Well, first off, the Collection CD is pretty listenable and enjoyable, a mixed bag of well-known singles as well as other songs that Alanis seemed to think were important for the collection. The DVD, however, is a disappointment. The extra footage tracks it promises are two poorly shot tracks from her Jagged Little Pill tour (the audio's bad, too). However there's an accapella "Your House" from her JLP Acoustic tour which is quite good, and the music video for "Ironic". The hour-long documentary, quite entertaining though having little replay value, provides tantalizing clips of live footage from great songs such as "Princes Familar" and "Your Congratulations" as well as in the studio recording "You Owe Me Nothing in Return" and "Jagged Little Pill: Acoustic". One wonders why these selections weren't expanded in full instead of those poor JLP outtakes. Or, at least, several promotional music videos could be included. Photos, tourbooks and backstage passes redeem the DVD a little, but overall I felt hoodwinked into spending an extra eight bucks over the purple "Collection".
