Alanis Morissette has been pushing people's buttons for the better part of a decade, but more important, she's been pushing herself in unique musical directions -- a combination that's made her one of the most enduring singer-songwriters of her generation. This 19-track retrospective retraces virtually all the steps that Alanis has made over the years, ranging from the angry-young-woman fist-shaking of such early hits as "You Oughta Know" to the almost hymnlike pensiveness of "That I Would Be Good." Naturally, the disc spends plenty of time on the singer's chart hits, but there's also a nice sampling of material that might have otherwise slipped under the radar -- from "Mercy," her elegiac contribution to Jonathan Elias's sweeping Prayer Cycle to a suitably sassy take on Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" (culled from the soundtrack to De-Lovely). The Collection only offers up one newly recorded tune -- a burnished take on Seal's "Crazy" -- but there's enough diversity in its grooves to make it a perfect one-stop for Alanis fans.
