David Byrne (b. May 14th, 1952)
Before anyone else was listening, David Byrne put his money where his ears were. The ex-Talking Head committed his record label, Luaka Bop, to uncovering new talent in the rock and pop of Latin America, a wild tropical hinterland where guitars meet congas, drum 'n' bass gets down with rumba, and hip-hop and salsa go mano a mano. The creator of TRUE STORIES is even producing a documentary about the movement. We asked Byrne to write a few choice words about his favorite sounds.
This is an exploding genre and a rapidly mutating scene -- the most exciting development in rock in the last decade, anywhere, as far as I'm concerned. Don't worry, you rockers out there, these aren't geezers with puffy sleeves or any of those Latin-music clichés, they're cool bands whose and some that I'm friends with, so I hope that they'll forgive me and know that their next record is the masterpiece the world has been waiting for.
