HERE THEY ARE Artists to Watch: Uman WHY WE'RE WATCHING: Uman, the French siblings Didier (keyboards) and Danielle Jean (vocals), create cool, classy ambient songs with an international flavor that proves their savoir faire is everywhere. YOU ARE HERE has a collaborative spirit that embraces poets, artists (check out Zad's jacket paintings), and jazz musicians, offering buoyant sounds that -- from the grooves on down -- are more than the sum of their parts. CAN'T MISS SONG: "N'doly and the Mother Land" is a catchy African lullaby featuring the tribal voice of Moussa Dialo. Then Didier and Danielle pump the beat and the volume until the tune bubbles and you want to lower the top of your imaginary convertible. WHERE THEY'RE GOING: Danielle was preparing to attend a party for a movie when we talked. Some fabulous Hollywood premiere bash? Nah, it's a flick about about Tierra del Fuego, near the Polar Circle. "I visit the world through its movies." When they're not at the movies, they're working on a multimedia project. Didier explains, "Danielle and I will play and sing with some parts played by computer, while pictures and video are projected on a screen." MAJOR INFLUENCES: Didier's clear about his influences: "First, jazz, when it is well-delivered and sincere. When I began to play music, I got the chance to meet a good musician, Pascal Prim, who taught me to listen to the world." Birds singing and "the human sentiments" are also strong influences. Danielle remembers, "When I was a child my parents listened to a lot of classical music. I think it was my first strong influence." She doesn't focus on one musical style, however. "I like all sorts of music and music that surprises me with a true personality." WHAT REALLY BOTHERS THEM: "The omnipotence of money and the stupidity of men," quoth Danielle. Didier admits that while he longs to stay with a poetic vision, life has a way of pulling him back to Earth: "I try to stay free, but the mail piles up!" We know the feeling. --Carol Wright |
