About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The range of John Barry's music places him securely in the pantheon of contemporary composers. The former rock 'n' roll trumpeter, born in York, England, has a special affinity for Africa, as attested to by his Oscars for BORN FREE (1966) and OUT OF AFRICA (1985). And this first-ever stereo recording of ZULU (1964) is a knockout. Strings and woodwind, charged up by a very dynamic brass sound, capture the danger, excitement, and savagery of the historic battle between 4,000 Zulu warriors and 120 Brits and Welshmen; "Bromhead's Safari," in particular, is typical of Barry's mastery in conjuring up grand, sweeping vistas. And the rest of this collection, which includes selections from 16 films (plus a SUNSILK television commercial!), amply demonstrates the composer's astounding accomplishments. THE SPECIALIST, THE DEEP, and MERCURY RISING are all first-class adventure scores, THE COTTON CLUB, insinuatingly sensual, MIDNIGHT COWBOY pop 'n' playful, KING KONG (1976) brooding and ominous, FRANCES stirringly romantic, and DANCES WITH WOLVES, another Oscar winner, movingly lyrical. It's all beautifully played, and one needn't have seen the movies to savor the abundance of this musical banquet. Andrew Velez, Barnes & Noble
