Editorial Reviews

The term "Baroque" comes from the Portuguese word for an irregularly shaped pearl. With that meaning in mind, consider these six trio sonatas by Czech composer Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745): Melodies veer off in unexpected directions, rhythms are subjected to sudden syncopations, and harmonies shift without warning. These are not just quirks, but salient features of this composer's style. No wonder great musicians like Heinz Holliger are so fascinated by his music. This is actually Holliger's second recording of these sonatas, and this time the oboist and his distinguished band of virtuosos sound even more comfortable navigating the demanding twists and turns of Zelenka's unusually long melodic lines. ECM's recording is superb -- clear and smooth, with a warm ambience. If you don't know this music, you're in for a treat. Zelenka may never be a household name, but his deliciously offbeat music is among the supreme examples of the Baroque, according to the true meaning of the word. Andrew Farach-Colton, Barnes & Noble

December 30, 1999: A re-recording/reprise of one of the first recordings of the legendary Trio Sonatas. Wonderful musicianship, an excellent treatment of an underlistened and under appreciated work. I recommend this work without reservation or any hestitation.
