Editorial Reviews

With their first self-released, self-titled album, Ludo seemed to be on their way to being the kind of smart rock band that Weezer and Fountains of Wayne can be, as lead singer and primary songwriter Andrew Volpe roamed through the ups and down of romance, viewing it all as if he were a coach potato comparing his life to popular movies and TV commercials. Years of touring the Midwest later, Ludo have signed to a major label and come under the wing of a hot producer, Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, Train). On You're Awful, I Love You, the band now sounds like it's trying to rank with the Killers and Jimmy Eat World. Wallace achieves a radio-ready mainstream rock sheen, smoothing the band's rough edges. As for the songwriting, every now and then something literate breaks through, such as at the beginning of "Topeka," when Volpe sings, "I found God in a catalytic converter in Topeka on a Monday night," and "Go-Getter Greg" stands out with enough flair to have fit in on the first album. Those who have never heard Ludo before may think You're Awful, I Love You is an efficient work of pop/rock. (Although the final track, "In Space," appears to run 8:19, it actually runs about 3:50, followed by a minute and a half of silence and then the hidden track "Boat Song.") September 03, 2008: I am a music-seller at Barnes &amp amp Noble and my friend in cafe told my friend and I about this killer band she heard at Warped Tour. She saw the name, and recognized the reference to an adorable little creature in Jim Henson's 'Labyrinth'. As always I procrastinated, but luckily my friend was already on it and a day or two later he had me listen to 'Horror of Our Love'. He is hooked on that song, but I liked it just enough to check them out myself. I got ahold of 'Youre Awful, I Love You' and 'Broken Bride'. I am not addicted but they are very original as well as capable of writing some amazing lyrics. Unlike the other two reviewers, I am not a fan of 'Lake Pontchartrain', nor am I terribly fond of 'Love Me Dead'. My three favorites would consist of 'Horror of Our Love', my favorite 'Topeka', 'Broken Bride pt. 1'. I highly recommend checking them out, don't base giving them a chance off of the related titles I gave below. Also, to Chris, the reviewer below, e-mail me and I might have Ludo's self-titled. I haven't checked yet, and I cannot make any guarantees, but it's possible.

August 11, 2008: The first thing from them I heard was the song Love me Dead and it was the craziest, bipolar masterpiece I have heard in a while. I also had a hard time trying to find their albums and have only been able to find the one, but according to their website, they have a self-titled album and an EP called Broken Bride. I wasn't able to find either albums for sale, but I found a website that streamed Broken Bride and it is even better then You're Awful, I Love You. It is a five song rock opera depicting the events of man who travels back in time to save his wife from dieing, but ends up in prehistoric times and then he finds himself in the future during the apocalypse! When he finally gets back to the morning his wife dies....... well you have to scour the world and find out for yourself, I don't want to be the one who ruins the ending for you! Now You're Awful, I Love You isn't a half bad album. There are a few really good song: Love Me Dead, Drunken Lament and Lake Pontchartrain. The rest of the album is decent, but isn't as up-tempo as those songs. If you can find any of their stuff I would buy it, and if anyone gets their hands on their self-titled album, leave a review here for it. Thanks!
