Editorial Reviews

Thirty years after the first invasion of Pepperland by the Blue Meanies, the irrepressible Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band has resurfaced from the loam to save us from the gray, loveless world of the greedy gloved establishment. Well, all right! But the big question is this: Are the Fab Four hitching a ride in a brand new Yellow Submarine, or are they towing the same old boat in a new (wet) suit? The answer: A little of both. Unlike the original '69 release, this "songtrack" contains all the Beatles songs used in the film -- five of which were exclusive to the movie, plus ten that original appeared on Sgt. Pepper's, Magical Mystery Tour, and Revolver. Missing are the seven original (and quite stuffy) George Martin orchestrations. Of the five Yellow Sub exclusives, only the salty, Lennon-driven "Hey Bulldog" rises to usual Beatle standards, though aficionados will enjoy the film version of "It's All Too Much," with its extra verse. Digitally re-mastered to create "wraparound" sound (a novel change from the extreme left-right stereo separation typical of Beatle records) and the song score does succeed as it was intended -- as a cool trip for groovy kids. Fans will also want to revisit the film, now on DVD, which stands as a brilliant vestige of the era's best psychedelic art. Steph Paynes, Barnes & Noble

March 23, 2009: What can one say? There's no other group like them and there never will be. I've loved them since I was 10-years old and saw them on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. I give this cd the highest rating..."Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!"

A redundant release.by Anonymous

January 28, 2007: I am a huge Beatles fan and I hate to ever give them a negative review, however, I do not think that this version of the classic “Yellow Submarine” album is NOT the one to buy. I have two problems with this release. 1.) George Martin’s wonderful film score has been cut from the album and 2.) the entire CD has been remixed and remastered. I am not a fan of the new sound. The original 1987 CD is the exact same mix that was first released on vinyl back in 1968. That album is much truer to the Beatles original intent. It is a warmer sound. The newer mixes are much louder, tinny and harsh sounding. Don’t get me wrong, I’m by no means a Beatles purist. I am a huge fan of the Beatles “Love” album. Where that album gives us something fresh, bold and new, “Yellow Submarine Songtrack” is merely a repackaging of an old familiar LP with sound quality that is sub par. It is utterly redundant.
