Two months before the album's release, the 700-pound, Puerto Rican Big Pun joined the list of rappers who perished long before their time. While hip-hop legends Tupac and Biggie were taken out in a hail of gunsmoke like the gangsta rhyme slangin' cowboys they pretended to be, Big Pun died of heart failure. The loveable, overweight lover lives on with the posthumous release of his sophomore effort, YEEEAH BABY. Produced by mentor and Terror Squad ringleader Fat Joe, the album, like his platinum-selling debut, CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, showcases classic Pun: He spits out comical and mildly pornographic tales over cleverly orchestrated, Latin-inspired beats. In addition to guest shots from Fat Joe and Drag-On on the player-hater dedicated "You Was Wrong," and Cuban Link on the grimy "We Don't Care," the track "Ms. Martin" highlights the hardcore, ride-or-die chick flow of Lil' Kim sound-a-like Remi Martin. Ironically, the optimistic lead single, "It's So Hard," featuring R&B crooner Donell Jones, finds a high-spirited Pun boasting, "I just lost 100 pounds! I'm trying to live! I ain't going nowhere -- I'm staying alive!" He didn't. But thankfully, Pun is immortalized here on wax and in the hearts of his fans. YEEEAH BABY! Tracy E. Hopkins

Arriving just two months after his death from a heart attack, Big Pun's second album Yeeeah Baby proves the rapper's demise was doubly tragic. Of course, the death of anyone at a young age is a tragedy in itself, but Yeeeah Baby displays an artist evolving beyond his previous work with remarkable ease. On the highlights "Watch Those," "Off Wit His Head," and "New York Giants," Pun spits out inventive rhymes and paces his delivery with excellence, more than proving that he should be considered in the top-ten list for late-'90s MCs -- among considerable competition (DMX, Jay-Z, Method Man). He also salutes his Latin heritage all over the album, switching from street slang to Latin lingo without batting an eye, and working a flute charanga sample on "100%." Despite a variety of track-masters throughout the album, Yeeeah Baby is quite seamless, thanks no doubt to friend and partner Fat Joe (the executive producer) as well as Pun himself.
