Editorial Reviews

X 2004 follows the footprints of the preceding year's X comp, gathering tracks from a variety of alternative CCM artists under the Tooth & Nail/Solid State/Bec Recordings umbrella, as well as a few ringers from outlets like Gotee. The set kicks off appropriately with Skillet's "Savior," a distortion-heavy number from the band's 2003 effort, Collide; Kutless follows suit with the Fuel-esque "Treason." Fans will note the heavy remix of Tobymac's "One Phenom" before X 2004 shifts gears into emo and pop-punk-flavored material with Reliant K and FM Static. Though it isn't the strongest moment from It's Pronounced Five Two, the chunky riffs of KJ-52's "Rock On" fit nicely here. John Reuben -- aka the Har Mar Superstar of the Christian rap world -- stops by with "Freedom to Feel," while Superchick's "Hero" appears in its remixed form. The album also features the bonus track "Livin' It," from Bec rap crew Cross Movement. Budget-priced and pretty strong throughout, X 2004 is a nice cross-section of the alternative movement in both rock and rap. Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
