August 02, 2004: John Ottman'score for X-Men 2 is...standard fare. The first track, "Suite from X2" is BRILLIANT! The music cracks along for the first minute and a half, then slides into more subtle elegaic territory, before repeating the opening minute's theme at the end of the track. However, the rest of the score fails to keep up to the high standard set by the first track. Cue some rather corny titles ("Storm's Perfect Storm" & "Sneaky Mystique")and the package as a whole may appear to be a letdown. "Mansion Attack" and "Getting Out Alive" have some inspired bombastic moments but they suffer from lengthy lulls, causing some listeners to descend into boredom. The theme from the very beginning of the score isn't repeated until the very end with the final track, "We're Here to Stay". The bulk of the score is more subtle, beautiful music ("Finding Faith"). "Cerebro" doesn't have quite the same "umph" factor that the "Cerebro" track from Michel Kamen's X-Men score. Sadly, Morzart's Requiem isn't included in this package. Compared to most summer blockbuster scores, X2 stands head and shoulders above them but when compared to Superman's, or Batman's or Spider-Man's respective scores, X2 falls kinda flat. Still, the first track is worth the price of the CD.

May 22, 2003: The music in this film was very awesome! As soon as i heard the opening scene white house chase music, i knew it was Mozart's work! The rest of the music was very good and fit in with the scenes they were put to. A must have soundtrack!
John Ottman (The Usual Suspects) provides a heart-racing, action-packed score for the blockbuster sequel, X-2: X-Men United.
John Ottman's score for X2 is a fairly traditional piece of film music, with soaring strings and choral vocals, anthemic brass and intense percussion. While pieces such as the serene "Finding Faith" and the tense, slow-burning "Mansion Attack" might be somewhat predictable, they're nevertheless effective and dignified, which is more than can be said of some of the scores from 2003's summer blockbusters. And, despite their somewhat cheesy names, tracks like "Storm's Perfect Storm," "Sneaky Mystique," and "Rogue Earns Her Wings" do manage to convey the X-Men characters through music (although fans might be disappointed by the spoiler in "Death Strikes Deathstryke"'s title). Other highlights include the album's opening suite, the climactic "Goodbye," and the bittersweet finale, "We're Here to Stay." It's not the most inspired score, but Ottman's music more than serves its purpose, and fans who enjoyed the music in the movie will most likely appreciate this album as well. Heather Phares
