    About this Artist

    Editorial Reviews

Featuring recordings from both Pat Metheny's solo albums and Pat Metheny Group releases, Works is an excellent introduction to the artist who helped make ECM Records a successful "boutique" record label. This collection includes seven excellent recordings originally released in the late '70s and early '80s. Works features Metheny's partner, keyboardist extraordinaire Lyle Mays, on four tracks. Metheny and Mays are truly musical soul mates -- rarely do two musicians complement each other as well as they do. "It's for You," penned by the duo, is one of the most moving instrumental compositions ever recorded -- Metheny wastes no notes during the soaring guitar solo on this beautiful recording. In fact, every track on Works is stunning. Tim Griggs, All Music Guide

June 02, 2000: This compilation of early 77-84 era Pat Metheny highlights(including his early group on some cuts) shows his range and great talent as a composer and player. Hits a variety of styles, including hard-bop,his unique jazz-rock fusion, and nearly new-age acoustic. It's for you' and 'Cross the Heartland' are the dramatic, extended solo vehicles in the jazz-rock fusion style that are worth the modest price by themselves. Though I own around 600 CD's, this CD is the one I have played the most over more than a decade. Pat is not my favorite artist, although I do think he's up there with McLaughlin and outranks everyone else on guitar. It's a collection of cuts from albums that are not going to be compared by anyone to ' A Love Supreme or 'Kind of Blue', but it is an excellent 'greatest hits' and it wears so well.
