About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Bassist Jaco Pastorius' Word of Mouth orchestra was an unfulfilled dream, a worthy concept that did not last long enough to live up to its potential. Its debut album was released without a listing of the personnel, so here it is: Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, and Tom Scott on reeds, trumpeter Chuck Findley, the easily recognizable Toots Thielemans on harmonica, Howard Johnson on tuba, drummers Jack DeJohnette and Peter Erskine, and percussionist Don Alias. The music ranges from The Beatles' "Blackbird" and some Bach to Jaco originals that cover straight-ahead jazz, Coltrane-ish vamps, and fusion. Next to the bassist/leader, Thielemans emerges as the main voice. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

September 26, 2001: Jaco was/is the best LEAD bassist in the musical world... his sometimes subtle, sometimes brash, sometimes arrogant playing makes this album perhaps the most diverse Jaco album. Even with the small number of tracks, Jaco takes an idea from beginning to end, and lets it play out as it wants to, but always keeping it under control.

July 20, 2000: Anything that Jaco Pastorius even participated in was superlative, if not for his contributions. However, this particular work is just an outstanding example of progressive big band music as well as jazz composition and arranging, and all around production. And of course, Jaco's playing is phenominal. -R.k.S.
