About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Leaving behind the chest-thumping jingoism of Shock'n Y'all with the frat-boy nihilism of Honkytonk University, Toby Keith kicks back on White Trash with Money, devoting his energies to limning the lives of "average people in an everyday bar," as he sings on "Get Drunk and Be Somebody." In addition to the new lyrical focus, he tries on some new styles, and pretty successfully -- three of the first five songs boast strings of an elegance that would do Nelson Riddle proud. The aforementioned "Get Drunk…" features a rousing southern soul horn section goosing along the bump 'n' grind. The infectious mid-tempo shuffle "Runnin' Block" sports a tasty Tex-Mex savor, thanks to an accordion line flitting around slide guitars and twangy upper strings licks. The songs, mostly by Keith alone or in partnership with Scotty Emerick, are beautifully crafted and lyrically stout. There's a love ballad built for piano and pedal steel ("Crash Here Tonight"), heartbreakers such as "A Little Too Late," and straight-ahead country-rock attacks ("Grain of Sand"). The only issue-oriented song, the somber country ballad "Ain't No Right Way," is bound to raise some hackles, though, as it takes shots at unwed mothers, abusive parents, and spineless politicians at the same time. The unfortunate album title may draw the yahoos, but the gritty slice-of-life portraits here are the stuff of thoughtful meditation, not drunken revelry. David McGee, Barnes & Noble

April 21, 2006: Not one to adhere to any type of mold, Toby Keith launches his own record label, "Show Dog Nashville" and continues to make music his fans can make some noise to. Never boring, never complacent, with WTWM Keith offers up a little something to quench any Toby taste. His first single "Get Drunk and Be Somebody" offers up some good ole country defiance, showing us the Toby-tude his fans have come to love and expect from Keith. Toby and writing partner Scotty Emerick, who on past releases have shown their flair for writing catchy, clever lyrics with songs like "Whiskey Girl", "Losing My Touch" and "As Good As I Once Was" are at it again. "Can't Buy You Money" "Grain of Salt" and "I Ain't Already There" (with Dean Dillon) once again show why Toby continues to reign supreme on country radio, and will for a very long time. His fans already know Toby has the finest set of pipes in the business, but without great songs, nobody would get to hear him. Once again this cd includes several "bus songs", so bring along your sense of humor. WTWM includes songs that span a wide variety, from country to southern rock to blues and honkytonk, and yes even a couple love songs. With this release Toby has added 12 excellent songs to the masterpiece of music he's painting. Am I a fan? You betcha... and if you're on the fence, jump down and join the millions of us who are, it's just too bad you ain't already there.
