About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Secret Garden -- Norwegian composer/keyboard artist Rolf Lovland and Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry -- based the title of their second album on the tale of Hansel and Gretel, in which the children drop white stones to guide their journey home in the moonlight. Where SONGS FROM A SECRET GARDEN (the duo's debut album) absorbs the listener in a romantic spell, WHITE STONES illuminates the soul's journey from shadow to homecoming: "Moving," "Hymn to Hope," "Reflection," "Escape," "Sanctuary," "Celebration," and "Home" are just some of the white stones lighting the way. Sherry's violin playing is poignant in "Appassionata" and the heartbreaking "Passacaglia," and the orchestral arrangements are sensitive and touching. A few upbeat tunes enliven the album: "Celebration" (for the midsummer's night feast) begins with a hint of a march, then grows until the whole valley is filled with the sound of drums and cymbals. "Illumination" ends our musical journey with a touching yet victorious anthem for violin, oboe (played by Simon Emes), chorus, and orchestra that will leave you flying. Other soloists include Davy Spillane on low whistle and Uilleann pipes, Noel Eccles on percussion, Derek Bell on tiompán. Carol Wright, Barnes & Noble

October 15, 2004: This is by far my favorite Secret Garden CD . I prefer the more allegro selections , despite the fact that they consider them to be filler material . The musicianship is first rate and you would never know that the individual songs were recorded in pieces , unless you visited their website . This CD has , what the Grateful Dead refered to as , the X factor . Everything on each selection flows together as if all of the musicians were in the same studio doing it live . Fionnuala Sherry dominates the entire work as the featured artist , but certainly doesn't over power the rest of the fine musicians involved . I find it remarkable that this CD has never received a major award .

December 08, 2002: This is music celebrating the human heart and spirit in all their many moods. With a good mix of lively songs and sweet, slow ones, this CD can make you dance one minute and cry the next. The music was composed by Norwegian Rolf Lovland and is orchestral in nature, featuring Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry, Lovland on piano, piper and whistler Davy Spillane, oboist Simon Emes, hardanger fiddler Annbjorg Lien and others. Lovland takes his inspiration from a variety of sources--Celtic, Scandinavian, Baroque, classical and his own modern sensibilities, as well as the talents of Sherry and the other musicians. The simple grace of his arrangements and the heartfelt emotion with which they are played make this music very memorable, and very special. When you listen to it, even on the worst of days, it?s nigh impossible to look about and not see beauty all around you. This release is my favorite of Secret Garden?s albums, and I recommend it most highly!
