Editorial Reviews

A curiously restrained tribute to such a typically ebullient gang, this adoring gumbo of many of the band's worst songs misses the point of the Pixies' oeuvre. Eve 6, Superdrag, Nada Surf and others emphasize their own bands' one-trick riffs as interpretations of the Pixies' far less self-conscious forays into pop, punk, and protogrunge. Local H's version of "Tame" may be the most musically inspired, and Weezer's "Velouria" demonstrates originality and doesn't endeavor to out-Pixie the Pixies. Unlike Deadicated, the model-tribute to the musically controversial Grateful Dead -- really, some of those songs sound terrible -- Where Is My mind? doesn't get that covering songs means revisiting songs for the sake of the songs, and avoiding a group "knockoff" is in itself a compliment to that group. It means the songs, as songs, transcend. Virtually nobody on this record takes the project further than a an "Ooh, I know that one!" after-hours jam session, and even the silly Pixies deserve more than that. Becky Byrkit, All Music Guide
