Editorial Reviews

Sometimes appearing in listings under the title Golden Classics Edition, this two-fer collects two early-'70s albums by Jerry Reed, including the hits "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "Ko-Ko Joe," "Another Puff," and "Lord, Mr. Ford." These are all available on BMG's Essential Jerry Reed disc, but what makes this package so appealing are the album tracks, which give a better indication of the breadth of Reed's talents than does the Essential collection. Reed's version of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice It's All Right" and John Loudermilk's should-have-been-a-hit "Big Daddy" feature some great guitar pickin', and his talents as a balladeer are demonstrated on several tracks, including his own "She Understands Me." Also present are the standard covers of others' hits, which might be regarded as filler if not for the novelty of Reed's unique style; The Coasters' "Framed" gets a humorous reading while he plays it straight on Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain" and the Mel Tillis-penned "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town." While not every track is a keeper, there is plenty of quality material here to enjoy. Greg Adams, All Music Guide
