Editorial Reviews

At first glance, this might seem to be a strange pairing. What's Your Mama's Name and Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone) are Tanya Tucker's second and third albums, begging the question as to why Delta Dawn and What's Your Mama's Name weren't issued together on a single disc. There are complex reasons to be sure, but one of them is simply that these two recordings are more suited to one another for a number of reasons; the first is that they prove that Delta Dawn was no fluke, and even that her next two efforts, as albums, were even stronger than her debut. Part of the reason is that Columbia Records turned Tucker's recording career over to its finest staff producer, Billy Sherrill. Here, the title tracks from each recording would be hits, and given the presence of "California Cotton Fields," "Blood Red and Goin' Down," "The Man That Turned My Mama On," "How Can I Tell Him," "Let Me Be There," "The Baptism of Jesse Taylor," and others, there's nary a weak moment over two albums -- with the possible exception of "I Think the South's Gonna Rise Again." This is one of the best two-fers Collectables has ever issued, with excellent sound. Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
