About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

As he proved when guiding the Beach Boys through their classic Christmas album some four decades back, Brian Wilson has a wonderful feel for the holiday -- not just the sounds but the sense of wonder that bubbles up when one lets down one's guard. This collection is awash in that guileless feeling, expressed equally in the warm, mellifluous versions of familiar hymns like "Silent Night" and "The First Noel" (the latter wrapped in a music-box melody that imparts a homespun feel so palpable that you can almost smell the eggnog) and in a brace of lively new compositions. The title track, one of the more poignant songs to come out of the Wilson camp in some time, is awash in hopeful spirituality -- think Lennon's "Happy Xmas" transliterated to the new millennium -- and arcing melodies. "Christmasey," co-written by Jimmy Webb, conveys a similar mood, thanks to ornate vocal arrangements and a lyric that captures the count-down-the-minutes enthusiasm that shepherds the holiday season into the lives of young 'uns. The most purely entertaining interludes, though, are those that find Brian recapturing the sound and spirit of his earliest days on the scene -- notably re-recordings of "Little Saint Nick" and "The Man with All the Toys," two anchors from the aforementioned Beach Boys classic. A charming soundtrack to any holiday party, for sure, and a way to extend the spirit well past the 12 days. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble

December 29, 2005: This line from 'John Bush's review' "Only two choices are puzzling: "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" definitely doesn't benefit from a backbeat"---You got to be kidding!!! This was the most popular Christmas song played this season. It really stuck in your head and left you humming all day long....

Brian Wilson Christmas Songs Banned!by Anonymous

November 23, 2005: Brian Wilson and his fellow Beach Boys grew up in a very different era - as did I. Perhaps you did, too. In contrast to that bygone era - today Brian could not perform at least 8 of the songs on his CD in a U.S. public school's "Winter Pageant". O Holy Night, First Noel, Joy To The World, etc. have all been BANNED by the Ebenezer Stooges of public education. Brrrrrrrrrr..... It's Christmas 2005, and Brian Wilson is a Rebel With A Claus. He has a sleigh filled with some very tasty Christmas carols as well...Not Holiday songs. Not Winter Solstace songs - Real Christmas carols about Jesus and shepherds and stars over Bethlehem. Does anybody else realize just how COOL that is in 2005? Well, I'm not going to over-analyze the CD track by track, and frankly I don't care if this album does or doesn't sound as good as Pet Sounds or Beach Boys Today. It sounds like a rocking Brian Wilson Christmas, and that's good enough for me. I'd have to go back more than ten years to find one as full of warmth and good cheer. This is the CD you'll want to trim your Christmas tree to this year. Meanwhile, in the face of a Circus Full of Grinches trying to ban even the mere wishing of "Merry Christmas" by shopping mall cashiers, Brian brings us a good ol' Christmas the way it used to be...the way it SHOULD be. Merry Christmas, Brian!
