About This Item

West Side Story has returned to Broadway in a new production directed by its two-time Tony Award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents. The score, by multiple Tony and Grammy Award winners Leonard Bernstein (music) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics), is widely regarded as one of Broadway's finest and includes "Tonight," "America,"
"Maria," "I Feel Pretty," "Somewhere," and "One Hand, One Heart."

This groundbreaking production offers a bold new design that builds on the show's raw power and emotion to create a fresh experience unlike any that came before it. The cast includes Matt Cavenaugh (A Catered Affair, Grey Gardens) as Tony, Karen Olivo (In the Heights) as Anita, Cody Green (Movin' Out) as Riff, and George Akram (The Farrelly's Stuck on You) as Bernardo. The role of Maria is played by Broadway newcomer Josefina Scaglione, a classically trained opera singer scouted from Buenos Aires to fill the leading role.

Don't miss the Barnes & Noble Exclusive edition of the album, which includes three bonus tracks. From the Label

How a musical more than 50 years old still sounds so goodby lshul

November 11, 2009: West Side Story lies at the intersection of genius (forgive the grammar):how can anything created by Bernstein, Sondheim and Robbins be anything less? Bernstein has crafted a symphony set to contemporary notes and rhthyms. Virtually every song is unforgettable. This album is not helped by a less than stellar Tony, but the other voices are exceptional and the arrangements are still the standard for which other musicals should be compared to, and most will fall short by a good margin.

A LET DOWNby bwaybabyndallas

August 01, 2009: Even though the score and talent is all there, it was a let down that it sounded like it could be the original, except for the few lyrics that were in Spanish, noting new was brought to the table. Skip it and keep on listening to the original B'Way Cast Recording.
