We Sold Our Soul for Rock 'n' Roll is a good single-disc collection of many -- but not all -- of Black Sabbath's best tracks from the Ozzy Osbourne era, drawing about half of its material from the group's first two albums, Black Sabbath and Paranoid. That makes it ideal for the fan who only wants one Black Sabbath disc, but those who want to dig deeper should be advised that all six LPs from the Osbourne period contain high-quality items not present here, especially the under-represented Master of Reality and Vol. 4. November 09, 2007: If you don't own a Sabbath CD, get this one. If you've never heard of them, you're not into metal. This album contains the most influential music that molded Heavy Metal into what it is today. Nobody can argue this, even a hardcore Judas Priest fan like myself. Black Sabbath had a 5 year head start on Priest, with only bands like Cream, Hendrix, and early Deep Purple to influence them. Their sinister sound will forever leave them at the top of the heap, especially when you consider the other bands playing so-called hard rock in the early 70's. They could have easily been dubbed a supergroup, as they were perfect at every spot. Piercing riffs never heard before, absolutely the best rhythmn section ever, and Ozzy's signature voice. Combined that with Geezer's gloomy lyrics, an awfully deep, dark sound, and you had a recipe that probably shocked most people. All of Sabbath's 70's albums went platinum, which at the time was a very big accomplishment.

March 07, 2004: This is the album that got me hooked on heavy metal. Everything on this album, Iommi's addictive riffs, Osbourne's spooky wail, Butler's dommy lyrics and Ward's pounding drums all make a truly great sound! Sabbath were the inventors of metal music, and easily remain among the best ever. No one can call themselves a metal fan unless this or at least one other Black Sabbath album is in their collection
