About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Opening with the ominous, fiery protest of "Sunday Bloody Sunday," War immediately announces itself as U2's most focused and hardest-rocking album to date. Blowing away the fuzzy, sonic indulgences of October with propulsive, martial rhythms and shards of guitar, War bristles with anger, despair, and above all, passion. Previously, Bono's attempts at messages came across as grandstanding, but his vision becomes remarkably clear on this record, as his anthems ("New Year's Day," "40," "Seconds") are balanced by effective, surprisingly emotional love songs ("Two Hearts Beat as One"), which are just as desperate and pleading as his protests. He performs the difficult task of making the universal sound personal, and the band helps him out by bringing the songs crashing home with muscular, forceful performances that reveal their varied, expressive textures upon repeated listens. U2 always aimed at greatness, but War was the first time they achieved it. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

July 31, 2009: A classic U2 album with several radio hits that sound even better in the context of the album.

December 18, 2006: Everyone has heard sunday bloody sunday and new years day, but the album is fantastic all the way through. 1.Sunday Bloody Sunday-Great rock anthem. I love the martial beat introduction to the song. Bono's impassioned singing drives the song and introduces the angry young man feel for the album. Check out the use of the electric violin for the wails in the background. 2. Seconds-Has a huge benefit from its introductory song, but not a bad track at all. The edge actually sings this song, but he sounds just like Bono. 3. New Year's Day-Great guitar, great vocal, great piano, and one of the greatest bass lines of all time. 4. Like a song- overlooked, but one of U2's greatest songs, Larry mullen continues his martial beats to great effect here, the vocal is great and the guitar solos are really great, they send shivers down my spine. 5. Drowning man-Great song, takes a softer turn but excellent. 6.The Refugee-Probably the worst song on the album, the drumbeat carrries the song. The vocal is pretty good but the instrumentation is too sparse here. 7.Two Hearts Beat as One-Great love song, with another great bass line from adam Clayton. 8. Red light-takes the album on a new spin. Pretty good. 9. Surrender-Up there with tracks 1 and 3. Brillant. I wish they did it more in concet. 10.40-good softer closing to a fantastic album and U2s first great work.
