It has been nearly four years since the young blues-rock sensation Susan Tedeschi released Just Won’t Burn, and her fans will find her follow-up, Wait for Me, revealing a more settled singer and guitarist. The set is steady, solid, and a lot mellower than either Better Days or Just Won’t Burn. With an extended band that includes horns and organ, Tedeschi goes for the gentle but big R&B sound on “Alone” and “Wait for Me,” reflecting a bit of the style of Tracy Nelson, another singer with an amazingly flexible voice. Though the horns are gone, the same feeling comes through on Paul Pena’s “Gonna Move,” which features Tedeschi's husband, Derek Trucks, on a bright slide guitar. On her original “Wrapped in the Arms of Another,” Tedeschi is accompanied by only Kofi Burbridge’s piano, which allows her to soar into the acoustic folk atmosphere, as she also does on “Blues on a Holiday” and Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice.” Taking up guitar for her original “Til I Found You” and “Hampmotized” (a reference to Colonel Bruce Hampton, who also plays guitar on the tune), Tedeschi comes closer to the rockin’ material on Just Won’t Burn. Her “I Fell in Love” rocks like Chuck Berry and features Johnnie Johnson, who played with Berry, on piano. Often compared to Bonnie Raitt, Tedeschi certainly illustrates on Wait for Me that like the red-headed pop singer, she knows no stylistic boundaries in popular music. Roberta Penn, Barnes & Noble
