Here one of the great Wagnerians of all time is working with an orchestra of musicians in Milan who played these works, but not that often. A sense of discovery and freshness comes through. Rough patches in the playing now and then hardly matter. In an intriguing way, the strings, so rich and lyrical, sound almost Verdian. These performances should dispel the assumption that Furtwängler always favored slow tempos.
