Editorial Reviews

The global fusion collective Afro Celt Sound System make their bid for the big time on their third release, and not just by inviting their Real World label boss, Peter Gabriel, along for the ride. When it comes to the ACSS sound, the operative word continues to be "big": folksy drums and strings from the around the world, massive beats, and a lustrous production aesthetic make for ceaseless thrills. Windswept bagpipe and fiddle runs, Senegalese talking drums, and Punjabi and Arabic vocal stylings weave rapturously through hard trance beats, making each cut feel as palpable as a living, breathing organism. Vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird makes his first foray here into English lyric writing, but any scarcity of Gaelic is more than made up for by the hardy Celtic current running throughout the album. "When You're Falling," with vocals from Gabriel, chugs along on a mandolin-powered melody that's got hit single written all over it; while Led Zep's Robert Plant recalls the hazy majesty of "Kashmir" with his vocal turn on "Life Begin Again." But don't let these stunt vocalists fool you: The Afro Celts have forged their own sound by now, and it at last translates the high-energy spectacle of their live show into pure, worldly pop. ACSS's impeccable production and loads of spirit make Further in Time an exalted celebration of life on planet Earth. Abraham Velez, Barnes & Noble

July 13, 2001: After volumes 1 & 2, I was expecting more of the same, so I was disappointed. Seems too Westernized, too close to pop/rap for me. I miss the more exotic sounds and vocals. I guess I'd prefer AFSS go ''back in time,'' which is perhaps my failing not theirs.
