About This Item

For years, Telarc has urged its premier Baroque orchestra to record Vivaldi’s great violin showpiece, the ever fresh, ever popular Four Seasons. Why the Four Seasons? The only possible reason to record another version of The Four Seasons is to introduce a new, astonishingly talented young Baroque violinist to the musical public. The stunning new young soloist is Christina Day Martinson, a native of Saskatchewan, Canada, and twice a National Finalist and prize-winner in the Canadian Music Competition. Ms. Day Martinson received her Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory, holds a Diploma from the Royal Conservatory in the Netherlands, and earned a Master of Music degree in historical performance from Boston University. She studied performance practice with Martin Pearlman, who became her mentor and provided her first professional opportunities on period violin, and trained with Marilyn McDonald, a leading American teacher of Baroque violin (and concertmaster for this recording). Ms. Day Martinson says that when she followed her instinct for Baroque violin and Baroque music: “I just instantly fell in love with the instrument” and “felt I had finally found my voice…Previous teachers on modern violin had always told me not to do this or to do more of that—for instance to use more vibrato than I wanted to, on every note—and when I found the Baroque violin it just seemed like coming home.” From the Label
