Editorial Reviews

Vivaldi's Concerto in G, RV 532, is rightly one of the composer's most popular works, not least for the evocative and delicate pluck of the solo mandolins. Here, violinist-conductor Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante create dramatic contrasts in volume and texture between the orchestral and solo parts of this work -- an effect that is mirrored by the programming of the CD as a whole, in which mandolin concertos are heard alongside some of Vivaldi's largest-scale works. The Concerto in C, RV 558, for instance, calls for no less than 11 solo instruments, an unusual combination of recorders, chalumeaux (early clarinets), violins in tromba marina (a rare version of the instrument with a vibrating bridge that causes a rattling sound), theorbos, mandolins, and a cello. In fact, every one of the seven concertos on this disc has a unique and vivid sonic character. Biondi and his cohorts do not rush through the music, as some other Italian period instrument groups do, but allow time for the melodies to breathe and for the instrumental colors to be fully appreciated. The result offers proof that Vivaldi was one of the most inventive composers of the Baroque, and it presents an ideal opportunity for listeners wishing to venture beyond The Four Seasons.
