Editorial Reviews

H.I.M.'s eighth album finds them toning down the atmospherics and sheen that were prominent on Dark Light in an attempt to make their heaviest album yet. According to frontman Ville Valo, the ultimate goal was to concoct a sound that combined My Bloody Valentine's Loveless with Metallica's Master of Puppets, and while Venus Doom doesn't quite meet such a lofty goal, it finds them back on track and sounding more metal than ever. There's less ear candy and more prominent riffs in the mix, and some subtle keyboard padding and studio buffing, but the bludgeoning drop-tuned guitars dominate throughout. It's a bigger and badder version of H.I.M. than in the past, and it's largely due to producer Tim Palmer (Ozzy Osbourne, Dredg). Just as the sound of the band has matured, Valo's voice has improved over time, and he experiments with a lower guttural range that fits the mood perfectly. The trademark gloom is as evident as ever within the lyrics and, as always, you can expect to hear the words "suffering," "blood," "misery," and "death" peppered liberally throughout the songs. Of course with lines like, "my heart's a graveyard, baby, and to evil we make love," H.I.M. isn't a band known for profound lyrics, but, at the same time, most fans of the band don't want to philosophize, they want to hear the group rock out, and this release shows them doing precisely that, even harder than before. October 29, 2008: HIM?s latest release; Venus Doom takes on a gloomier, doomier turn. The new path brings out the best in everyone. HIM set a new standard and pushed themselves to darker routes. A refreshing view on love and a new definition for what ?Love Metal? means. Not only does the album introduce us to HIM?s darker side, but many people themselves first get introduces to the Finnish Quintet.
The title track off the album Venus Doom gives a heavy start to the album. The louder than normal drumming coincides along fast bass lines. The songs chorus is describing how one will fall for another. Loud, fast paces choruses alongside Linde?s appropriately fast solo already bring the listener surprises. A heavy slow breakdown is accompanied by Ville?s deep vocal skills. Venus Doom already captivates its meaning in a doomy intro.
The second track makes a perfect scenario for a haunted house or horror flick. Eerie keyboards demonstrate creepiness. Its melancholic chorus brings almost operatic themes. Linde again outdoes himself in a very propelling, kick your ass solo. The final chorus is accompanied by a background female vocalist while a haunting ending slowly diminishes.
In the third song, Passion?s Killing Floor, starts out as a dark cosmic theme. The idea of Ville?s heart being a graveyard, already makes the listener feel this songs darkness. The slowest, monstrous breakdown is shown in this song as a demonic voice is heard alongside. Somewhat of a dark, space keyboard makes it?s presence known. The fourth song, The Kiss of Dawn, was the band?s first released single off Venus Doom. A heavy but catchy riff starts out while a bass solo is let alone. Catchy drums, melodic harmonies, are what make this song stimulating. Making his presence known again with one of his faster solos, Linde kicks ass. Slow paces rhythms and elusive vocals slowly fade leaving the listeners numb. The bands 10-minute ballad cuts in as the fifth saga of the album; definitely the gloomiest song up to date. The chorus is accompanied by piano which make for an emotional feel by the listener. A shadow of hopelessness consumes me. Ville?s deep vocals and mellow keys lead us to what seems the end. But abruptly, Gas and Linde join forces to speed up and Mige follows afterward with bass power. The hopeless felling chorus returns and trippy hooks end this ballad. By far this is Linde?s fastest shred solo ever.
The sixth chapter takes a sharp turn as its danceable rhythms and groovy choruses bring the listener off their feet. Another fast solo and Burton?s keys partner with Ville?s powerful vocals to end this power quest.
Song or Suicide is number seven. A short, mellow acoustic bit sums up this one minute reflection.
Bleed Well is part eight of the album, another upbeat song. Burton?s keyboard skills support this as a theme song to bleed well to. Ville tops himself as the screamer amidst keyboard solos and a power solo. Griming lyrics that promote hell end this fierce song.
Cyanide Sun ends as part nine of nine of Venus Doom. What a way to end it too! Slow moving verses encompassed with sinister choruses captivate apocalyptic images. A finishing solo preludes to Ville?s final words as a shadowy ending conclusion takes over. An appropriate, overcast finale to finish anyone off. Venus Doom enthralled the dark side of its listeners and new sounds to finalize its significance.

March 30, 2008: Agian two years passed from the last one so they released a new album...but this one is really what fans expected for so long. Venus Doom is harder and heavy, but that's what HIM was and what HIM is. Venus Doom contains great songs like Venus Doom, Dead Lovers Lane, Sleepwalking Past Hope, Kiss Of Down... When you're listening it...you truly remeber of Black Sabbath...that means that Ville really succesed to make another superb album.
