December 13, 2003:
I've heard Williams' "Fantasia" performed live by two orchestras, and in both instances, they brutally raped the music. The piece holds enormous potential for the listener's mind to create imagery, but not if it's performed with a complete lack of sensitivity. Leonard Slatkin obviously knew this when he conducted the orchestra for this performance. What they do with it is nothing short of magic. The rest of the cuts on the CD are gorgeous, too. Just buy it, and be prepared to set aside an entire afternoon listening to it over and over again. Warning: Have Kleenex available. I used to play "Fantasia" as a demo cut for customers when I was in audio retailing. It regularly made women cry.
