About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

V.I.P. was the last album recorded by the classic lineup of Fela's Africa 70 (to be replaced by the even larger Egypt 80 orchestra), from a live Berlin concert in 1978. The title stands for "Vagabonds in Power" and features one of the boss's frequent lengthy orations. Fela lays into the Nigerian government's abuses of power and asserts his own dominion over the "Kalakuta Republic" -- his personal compound (and with more than 27 wives and as many bandmates, he was barely exaggerating). AUTHORITY STEALING breaks in his mostly new band on an album-length song, a scalding attack on the government's "maladministration," "defraudulment," and "roguerylization," harsh enough that it originally had to be released in Ghana.
