May 05, 2001: New Orleans virtuoso Sidney Bechet appears here in a variety of settings. Perhaps most interesting are eight extended-play sides recorded in 1940 with cornetist Muggsy Spanier, backed only by Carmen Mastren on guitar and Wellman Braud on bass. The interplay between Bechet and Spanier is tremendous. Of particular note to jazz fanatics: on ''Up a Lazy River,'' Bechet recapitulates on soprano sax Louis Armstrong's famous double-time vocal break that Armstrong recorded back in the early 30s.
