About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

While many of their nu-metal peers have contented themselves with pacing around, snarling, in concentric circles, these Californians deserve credit for taking wing, even if their flights of fancy occasional crash and burn. On their fifth outing, Korn stay on course more often than not -- there are no bagpipe interludes this time around, for starters -- and manage to convey both bare-knuckled aggression and hopeless, inward-looking angst with equal credibility. On the former front, Korn have seldom exploded with more passion than on "Here to Stay," which is powered by Fieldy's sternum-rattling, down-tuned bass, or "Wake Up Hate," which grinds with a purposeful ugliness reminiscent of Ministry at their most unhinged. Jonathan Davis reclaims his spot atop the pile of metal's sensitive guys, delivering a laundry list of disaffection with surprising subtlety on the goth-drone "Make Believe" and the new wave-tinged "Hollow Life." As if to convince us -- or himself -- that he hasn't gone totally soft, Davis also spits out some of his angriest material to date: "Thoughtless" channels the sort of wild paranoia-cum-revenge fantasies that fueled "Faget" on Korn's first outing, while "No One's There" lashes out at an uncomprehending world with a combination of adolescent insecurity and cold, clinical precision. Rumored to have cost nearly $3 million to produce, Untouchables is without a doubt the most ambitious disc from the latest wave of hard-rock bands: It's not as easily digested as Korn's previous work, but ultimately, it's far more rewarding.
